Hintless Privacy Policy

Hintless is a grammar coach that runs entirely in your browser. It does not collect, send or sell any of your data.

What Hintless reads

To underline mistakes, Hintless reads the text you type into text boxes and editable areas on the pages you visit. That text is checked on your device by the grammar rules and spelling dictionary built into the extension. It is never sent to a server, and Hintless makes no network requests at all.

What Hintless stores

Hintless keeps a small amount of data in your browser's local extension storage, to track your progress. It never leaves your device:

• Progress counts: for each day, how many mistakes of each kind were underlined, how many you fixed and how (on your own, with the hint, or after showing the answer), and how many words you typed.
• Mistake IDs: short numeric fingerprints of mistakes you have already seen, revealed the answer for, or marked "Not a mistake", so they are not counted twice or underlined again. These are numbers, not your text, and your text can't be rebuilt from them.
• Memory per idea: how well you seem to remember each idea (such as articles or verb agreement) and when it last came up in your writing, so Hintless can show what's fading.
• Settings, such as the "Hint first" toggle.

Hintless does not store the text you write, the pages you visit or their addresses.

What Hintless shares

Nothing. There are no accounts, analytics, ads, trackers or third-party services.

Deleting your data

• Reset progress in the Hintless popup clears your progress counts, memory per idea and the mistakes you have seen or revealed. Mistakes you marked "Not a mistake" stay hidden.
• Removing the extension deletes everything it stored.

Permissions

• Storage: to save the progress and settings described above on your device.
• Access to the sites you visit: so Hintless can check text in the text boxes you write in, wherever you are. That text is only checked locally, as described above.

This website

The extension and this website are separate. hintless.app counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and doesn't track you across sites. If you join the teacher list, your email and answer are stored in our own Cloudflare account, not with any other service, and used only to contact you about Hintless. Email us to be removed.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
